Transforming Outside Spaces, One Step at a Time

Mary Elliott, the award-winning designer and a graduate of Leeds Beckett University, is a garden designer based in York. With a First Class Honours degree in Garden Art & Design, Mary has been designing and creating beautiful gardens throughout North Yorkshire and Leeds. Mary's gardens are not just visually appealing but are also full of wildlife attraction, year-round interest, and low maintenance gardening. Mary's selected panel of landscape contractors is fully insured, Marshall's registered, and provides written guarantees for high-quality built patios, pergolas, walls, and water features.

Services Offered

At Mary's garden design, we offer a comprehensive garden design service, from the initial visit to the construction and planting of your garden. The design process includes:

  • The Sketch Design: During the initial visit, which is free of charge within 40 miles of York, Mary will discuss your preferred style, favourite colour schemes, and priorities. Mary will then provide you with imaginative possibilities within your budget. The sketch design will include an informal, romantic sanctuary, complementing your property, creating a lasting impression, making reference to the history, architecture, or style of your house. Family-friendly spaces, wildlife attractive, sustainable planting schemes to enhance your environment, instant screening with semi-mature trees and hedges are also available.
  • The Hard Landscape Plan with Schedule of Materials: After finalising the sketch design, Mary will provide you with the hard landscape plan with a schedule of materials on which a contractor will base his written quotation.
  • Planting Plan with Schedule of Plants: Mary will then supply you with a planting plan with a schedule of plants on which she will base a written quotation for the supply and delivery of plants, and labour for planting managed by her personally.
  • Maintenance Schedule: Mary will provide a maintenance schedule, listing plants and the maintenance required by each and at which month.

Country House Gardens

Country house gardens by Mary are designed to connect with the grandeur of large country homes. The informal summer border is a riot of colour, texture, and perfume and as it fades, winter seed heads provide feed for birds. The more formal border is edged with box and columnar conifers to provide structure throughout the year, containing the undulating swathes of colour. A paved mowing edge allows easy mowing.

Woodland Garden

Heavy shade cast by mature trees requires shade-tolerant plants that perform during winter and early spring. These delightful gardens are a haven of tranquillity all year round, full of birdsong in spring.

Cottage Gardens

Enjoy summer colour and perfume, winter interest and wildlife, seclusion, and tranquillity with Mary's cottage gardens. The professional plant-centred approach is based on many years of experience and very high-quality plant supply direct from UK producers. Low maintenance is always Mary's priority so that you enjoy the benefits without the hard work.

Contemporary Urban Gardens

Both clients requested low maintenance gardens that reflected the character and style of their modern homes. Mary's front garden is planted with variegated euonymus rather than the usual box as a contemporary twist. It is shade-tolerant and clips easily to shape. Planted into gravel over a water permeable membrane - no weeding is necessary.

Paving, Walls and Decks

Mary's clients requested a space for entertaining their friends at the gable end of the house. Stone pergola pillars were constructed to match the house elevations perfectly; the timber cross beams of green oak make a connection with the distant woodland; low walls provide seating.

Instant Screening

Instant screening is available to screen eyesores or exposure to neighbour's windows and traffic. Field grown instant hedging is available from Mary's North Yorkshire producer.

Wildlife Garden

Mary's selection of attractive trees, shrubs, climbers, and herbaceous plants can create a haven for wildlife in your garden, encouraging a variety of insects, birds, amphibians, and mammals.
