Sam The Gardener

Samuel Beresford-Foster, a Writtle trained local gardener, is the founder of Sam The Gardener. Sam has been landscaping and maintaining gardens for over 30 years, starting from taking care of gardens in the Halstead and Colchester areas in his school holidays. His professional gardening career began at Marks Hall, where he worked while studying Horticulture, Landscape and Amenity management at Writtle College, Chelmsford.

Sam's career in gardening has led him to places such as the famous gardens of Villa Massei in Tuscany, where he worked for ten years, and the former home of Marc Chagall, near St Paul de Vence, where he built and maintained the garden for a year. His experiences and studies have equipped him with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide top-notch gardening services.

Our Services

Sam The Gardener provides a full range of garden maintenance services, including:

• Lawn Care: Grass cutting using professional grass cutting equipment, weed control, feeding, scarifying, and aeration. We understand the importance of timing for lawn care and use only high-quality products and equipment. No lawn is too big or too small for us.
• Weeding, Border Care, and Bed Preparation: We create new beds and prepare them for planting, or clear, cut back, and cultivate existing overgrown beds. We understand the best ways to deal with weeds, using physical removal as the primary means of control, with follow-up weed killer treatments for the most effective result.
• Hedge Cutting: We trim all hedges, from small box ornamental hedges up to 20ft Leylandii. We will come and inspect the hedge then give a free quote. This can include removal of the clippings or chipping and mulching as required. All hedge cutting operations are done to strict health and safety standards, minimising the risk of damage to property or injury to ourselves, you, or the public.
• Shrub and Rose Pruning: Plants require different types of care, unlike many we see that have been cut back in a uniform way to simply tidy them up. Roses are pruned at the right time of year depending on variety, fruit canes and shrubs are treated in the same manner, and at all times we listen to our clients and listen to their advice and experience if there are other specific instructions.
• Regular Maintenance: We can offer a regular garden maintenance service. We tailor the service to suit you and your budget, and always strive to offer value for money by giving an added personal touch.
• Vegetable Gardens: From creating raised beds to digging over vegetable patches and erecting greenhouses. We enjoy sharing our personal experience and knowledge in growing fruit and veg.
